Dr. Sherif Makar, MD: Board-Certified Neurologist & Neuro-Oncologist
Advanced neurological and neuro-oncology care for patients in Lake Mary and across Central Florida
When facing a complex neurological condition, experience matters. Dr. Sherif Makar is one of the few specialists in Central Florida to hold dual qualifications as a Board-Certified Neurologist and a UCNS-Certified Neuro-Oncologist. Whether you are seeking answers for a new diagnosis or a second opinion, Dr. Makar provides comprehensive neurology services with the academic expertise of a large hospital system—without the red tape.

From Stanford to Lake Mary: A Journey of Excellence
Dr. Makar’s path to Charis Neurology is defined by rigorous training and a commitment to innovation. He began his medical journey at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine before completing his Neurology residency at the University of Florida College of Medicine–Jacksonville.
To master the complexities of brain and spine cancer, Dr. Makar was selected for a prestigious Neuro-Oncology Fellowship at Stanford University. There, he trained alongside world leaders in the field, gaining specialized expertise in managing primary brain tumors (Glioblastoma, Astrocytoma) and metastatic spine conditions.
Today, he brings that same level of precision medicine to Lake Mary. Dr. Makar has served as a Principal Investigator for clinical trials involving immunotherapy and targeted therapies, ensuring his patients have access to the latest advancements in neurological care.

Walking Side-by-Side Through Your Journey.
Dr. Makar believes that fear often comes from the unknown. That is why he prioritizes patient education. He takes the time to explain your imaging, discuss the "why" behind your treatment plan, and ensure you feel confident in your care.
By establishing Charis Neurology as a comprehensive center with on-site MRI, EEG, and Infusion, Dr. Makar ensures that he can personally oversee every aspect of your diagnostic journey, eliminating the gaps in care that often happen at larger institutions.
Dr. Makar works closely with Jamie Fernandez, APRN, FNP-C to ensure patients have timely access to coordinated, compassionate neurological care.
Frequently asked questions
What does it mean to be a "Fellowship-Trained" Neuro-Oncologist?
It means Dr. Makar completed additional years of rigorous, specialized training specifically for brain and spine tumors after his standard neurology residency. Most general neurologists do not have this qualification. This expertise allows him to design precise treatment plans for complex cancers and tumors that other doctors typically refer out to large university hospitals.
I have already been diagnosed elsewhere. Can I come for a second opinion?
Absolutely. Second opinions are critical in neurology, especially for brain tumors, MS, and rare conditions. Dr. Makar frequently reviews cases from other providers to confirm diagnoses or offer alternative treatment strategies based on the latest research. We can coordinate with your existing team or take over your care entirely.
Does Dr. Makar only treat brain tumors?
No. While Dr. Makar is a specialist in neuro-oncology, he is also a Board-Certified Neurologist who treats the full spectrum of neurological conditions. We see patients daily for migraines, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), neuropathy, memory disorders, seizures, and Parkinson’s disease. You get the same level of precision care whether you have a headache or a complex diagnosis.
Do you offer infusion therapy at the office?
Yes. We have a private, dedicated Infusion Suite right here in our Lake Mary facility. This allows patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and other neuro-immunological conditions to receive their biological therapies in a comfortable, monitored setting without checking into a hospital.
Does Dr. Makar accept my insurance?
Dr. Makar accepts most major insurance plans. Coverage and referrals vary by plan, so we recommend reviewing accepted plans and billing information before your visit. You can find full details on our Insurance & Billing page or contact our office with specific questions.
Why is having an MRI and EEG on-site better for me?
Speed and accuracy. At most practices, you are given a referral slip and told to drive to a third-party imaging center, where you might wait weeks for an appointment and days for results. Because our High-Field MRI and EEG labs are down the hall, Dr. Makar often reviews your images immediately. This cuts the wait time significantly and allows us to start your treatment plan sooner.
Which areas of Central Florida do you serve?
While our facility is located in Lake Mary just off I-4, we are a regional destination for patients across Seminole, Volusia, and Orange Counties. We regularly care for patients from communities such as Sanford, Longwood, Winter Park, Orlando, Deltona, and surrounding Central Florida areas.
