From Critical Care to Compassionate Neurology

Jamie’s journey into healthcare began with a focus on preventative wellness. She earned her first Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Florida State University, giving her a deep understanding of how lifestyle, movement, and physiology impact long-term health. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and her Master of Science as a Family Nurse Practitioner, graduating with high honors to become board-certified by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

Before joining Charis Neurology, Jamie spent over 8 years in high-pressure hospital environments, including Cardiac Progressive Care and Obstetrical Emergency Departments. She has managed complex cases ranging from heart transplant recovery to acute emergency triage. This diverse critical care background allows her to see the "big picture" of a patient's health—understanding that neurological symptoms are often connected to the heart, vascular system, and overall body wellness.

Today, Jamie brings that clinical precision to Lake Mary with a softer touch. She believes that true healing happens when patients feel heard. Whether managing migraines or memory concerns, she is dedicated to "meeting patients where they are"—providing education, empathy, and evidence-based care that empowers them to live their best lives.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-C)?

A Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) who has completed master’s-level training and board certification. Like a doctor, Jamie is licensed to diagnose medical conditions, order and interpret tests (like MRI and bloodwork), prescribe medications, and create comprehensive treatment plans.

Will Dr. Makar still be involved in my care?

Absolutely. Charis Neurology operates as a collaborative team. Jamie works closely with Dr. Sherif Makar to review complex cases and ensure every patient receives the benefit of their combined expertise. Seeing Jamie often allows for sooner appointment availability while maintaining the high standard of care Charis is known for.

Can Jamie prescribe medications for my condition?

Yes. As a licensed APRN in Florida, Jamie has full prescriptive authority. She can manage your current prescriptions, adjust dosages, and order new medications for migraines, seizures, and other neurological conditions just as a physician would.

What specific neurological conditions does Jamie treat?

Jamie is trained to manage a wide range of neurological concerns. She specializes in migraines and chronic headaches, memory loss and cognitive screenings, neuropathy management, and follow-up care for chronic conditions like epilepsy or Parkinson's disease.

Does seeing a Nurse Practitioner cost the same as seeing the Doctor?

Generally, yes. Most insurance plans classify a specialist visit the same way, regardless of whether you see an MD or an APRN. Your copay and deductible typically remain the same. The primary benefit is often a significantly shorter wait time to get onto the schedule.
